We've driven by Old Hampton Store & Barbecue a couple of times while visiting the eldest son, who now lives in Banner Elk, and we finally timed it right for lunch and a beer. What a great place! A band was playing bluegrass indoors and weather was perfect to sit outdoors, so we thought we were in for a treat.
Was their BBQ a treat? Meh. Not bad BBQ, really. It was a tad dry and slaw shoulda/coulda been a little wetter too. The sauces on the table helped a lot. Mac and Cheese side dish is some of the best I’ve had outside of Poole’s Diner (in Raleigh).
Worth the stop at the store alone and nice bar selections. Might would try the fried bologna sandwich next time.*
*After my FB post I had a lot of people say that they're known for their fried bologna sandwiches, so we went back a few weeks later on August 18. Damn and a half! What an awesome sandwich. Thick cut bologna, fried crispy on the outside and warm inside. The lettuce and tomato were the perfect accompaniment, fresh and sliced as I like it. Who needs a BLT with bacon? My choice from now on will be the "B" in bologna.
