BackCountry Barbecue / Lexington, NC

Writer: PigBadWolfPigBadWolf

The sign outside BackCountry Barbecue reads “Hickory Done for 40 Years.” Well, I’d add that the hickory done “gone” and left a below average sandwich. Located just off I85 south of Lexington, this restaurant is the only BBQ place I could find open on Sunday in the area. If you’re really, really, really jonesing for some ‘cue on the 7th day, it will kinda suffice. Any other day of the week and there are numerous other joints nearby that are so much better.

While the meat had a decent smokiness, the aroma didn’t carry over into the flavor. It was a good cook, but a little wiry in a couple bites. The red barbecue slaw was not enjoyable as it reminded me more of kimchi than any other slaw I have ever had. Tad too sharpe against the bland BBQ, which had absolutely no peppery heat.

I can say that I tried a new place and I don’t ever need to go again… even if desperate for ‘cue on a Sunday somewhere outside of Lexington. 3/10
